4-day Mount Meru trek
The most beautiful small mountain in Tanzania, and the best warm-up for Kilimanjaro.
The route at a glance
About 70 km west of Kilimanjaro lies a hidden gem: Mount Meru (4,566 m), Tanzania's second-highest mountain. Most people skip it, but many who climb it say it is even more beautiful than Kilimanjaro.
Meru is perfect as a stand-alone trek with wildlife (giraffe, zebra, buffalo and elephant on day one) and as the best acclimatization before Kilimanjaro.
Because the mountain is inside Arusha National Park, you walk with an armed ranger. On summit night you follow the dramatic rim of Meru's crater along a knife-edge ridge. From Socialist Peak you see Kilimanjaro on the horizon and look straight down into the crater, about 1,500 m below. You sleep in wooden huts, not tents, and there are no crowds.
Meru + Kilimanjaro combo
Many guests climb Meru for 4 days and then Kilimanjaro for 7 days (Lemosho or Machame), 11 days in total. Arriving at Kilimanjaro already acclimatized to 4,566 m gives you a much better chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.
