Your safari at a glance
This 6-day safari is built for the calving season.
Start in Arusha, see giant elephants in Tarangire, descend into the famous Ngorongoro Crater, then spend two days at Ndutu, where thousands of wildebeest give birth from late January to mid-March.
It is the best time to see newborn wildebeest, and lions, leopards, cheetahs, servals and caracals hunting. If you wish, we can extend your trip to Zanzibar after the safari.
Detailed itinerary
- DAY1
Arrival: Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha
Welcome to Tanzania. Your Wildecho Exped driver will be waiting at the airport with a sign bearing your name and will take you to your hotel in Arusha to relax. In the evening, your guide gives you a short briefing about the safari ahead. Enjoy the pool, garden, bar and restaurant.
Overnight: Hotel in ArushaLunch, dinner & breakfast - DAY2
Arusha to Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, drive to Tarangire National Park. The Tarangire River runs through the park, drawing giraffes, zebras, antelopes and buffalo to drink, and with them many lions. In the dry season, large herds of elephants gather here: Tarangire has one of the largest elephant populations in northern Tanzania. The park is also famous for its huge, ancient baobab trees.
Overnight: Hotel in KaratuDinner & breakfast - DAY3
Ngorongoro Crater to Ndutu
After an early breakfast, descend to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the largest intact volcanic calderas in the world. Look for elephants, buffalo, lions, cheetahs, zebras and the endangered black rhino. You won't see giraffes here, because they can't climb down the steep crater walls. Enjoy a picnic lunch near the Hippo Pool, then drive to Ndutu in the afternoon.
Overnight: Tented camp in NdutuLunch, dinner & breakfast - DAY4
Full day in Ndutu: calving season
A full day at Ndutu, in the southwestern corner of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area on the edge of the Serengeti. From late January to mid-March, thousands of wildebeest give birth here. Newborn calves walk within minutes and run within hours, because predators are waiting. It is the best chance to see all the cats in a few days: lion, leopard, cheetah, serval and caracal.
Overnight: Tented camp in NdutuLunch, dinner & breakfast - DAY5
Ndutu morning game drive to Arusha
After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive at Ndutu. See elephants, giraffes, antelopes and animals drinking at Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek, beautiful spots for photos among the acacias. Ndutu is part of humanity's story too: in 1973 an ancient human skull, hundreds of thousands of years old, was found near the lake, not far from Olduvai Gorge. Drive back to Arusha in the afternoon.
Overnight: Hotel in ArushaDinner & breakfast - DAY6
